Our Results of Cataract Interventions with Sealed Capsule Irrigation System

Purpose: To evaluate the results of cataract surgeries using sealed capsule irrigation system.

Materials and Methods: Ten eyes of 9 young patients underwent clear lens (7 eyes) or cataract (3 eyes) extraction. After the removal of the lens, capsular bag was washed out using sealed capsule irrigation system (SCI, Perfect Capsule™, Milvella). Distilled water colored with trephine blue was used for the destruction of the residual lens epithelial cells. The operation was completed with intraocular lens implantation. The mean age of the patients was 29.8 years (9-53 years). The mean follow-up period was 18 months (12 to 20 months). On each of their follow-up visits, retro illuminated anterior segment photographs were obtained during slit lamp examination, using a digital camera.

Results: After the operation the visual acuity did increase in 8 eyes and remained at the same level in 2 eyes. After 6 months following the intervention posterior capsule opacification (PCO) became apparent in 4 patients. At their last examination PCO was observed in 9 eyes (90%) and PCO scoring was; intense in 1 eye, moderate in 4 eyes, mild in 3 eyes, minimal in 1 eye. Only in 1 eye the visual acuity decreased because of PCO.

Conclusion: Although, the prevention of posterior capsule opasification by using sealed capsule irrigation is not satisfactory, however, this system may be effective and practicable in future by using a powerful cytotoxic agent instead of distilled water.
