3Yüzüncü Yıl Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, Van, Prof. Dr Purpose: To evaluate the intraocular pressure (IOP) lowering effect of latanoprost therapy in long-term follow up and to observe the development of any resistance to therapy like that to other antiglaucoma medications.
Materials and Methods: Thirty-six eyes of 24 patients with primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) seen in the Ophthalmological Department of Yüzüncü Yil University Medicine Faculty Hospital in 1999-2004 were evaluated. The mean follow up period was 61.27±6.51 months (range 48-65). The patients had no history of intraocular surgery or inflammatory diseases like uveitis or herpetic keratitis. Patients were treated with latanoprost 0.005% monotherapy. Ten of the patients were female and 14 were male. The mean age was 66.33±11.60 years (range 45-87). They were screened in the Glaucoma Department.
Results: Before therapy the mean IOP was 22.8±3.15 mmHg. The mean IOP after therapy in year 1 was 16.45±3.29 mmHg (25.81% drop), year 2 was 15.0±1.84 mmHg (32.37% drop), in year 3 was 16.40±2.4 mmHg (26.06% drop), in year 4 was 16.00±1.41 mmHg (27.86% drop), and in year 5 was 16.75±2.50 mmHg (24.48% drop). Decreases in IOP measurements compared to the pretreatment values of the all follow up measurements were statistically significant, while there was no statistically significant difference between 1st and 5th years’ follow-up results.
Conclusion: Latanoprost monotherapy in POAG is effective in long-term (5 years) follow-up. Keywords : POAG, latanoprost, beta blocker, antiglaucoma medications
