Dr. Purpose: To compare the optical coherence tomography (OCT) parameters of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and optic nerve head (ONH) between primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) and primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG) patients followed up in our clinic.
Materials and Methods: Prospectively between January 2006 and May 2006, smax, imax, savg, iavg, average thickness parameters for RNFL analysis; and disk diameter, disk area, cup area, rim area, vertical cup diameter parameters for ONH analysis with OCT were compared among 3 groups, i.e. PACG group (Group 1: 54 eyes of 27 patients), POAG group (Group 2: 54 eyes of 27 patients), and a control group (Group 3: 40 eyes of 20 patients).
Results: Mean age of Groups 1-3 was respectively 61.7±9.9, 64±10, and 52±9.6. According to the OCT evaluation for Groups 1 and 2 between disk area (2.6±0.5, 2.4±0.4), rim area (1.1±0.5, 1.3±0.7), and cup area (1.2±0.5, 1.3±0.7) there was a statistically significant difference (p<0.05). When Groups 1 and 3 were compared smax (130.30±42, 182.78±157), savg (100.43±32, 125.59±18), iavg (108.31±34, 133.76±21), average thickness (83.40±23, 100.66±12), cup area (1.24±0.59, 0.58±42), and rim area (1.17±0.51, 1.74±0.55) were statistically significant. Moreover, all parameters were statistically significant when Groups 1-3 were compared.
Conclusion: For the diagnosis and follow-up of POAG and PACG patients OCT is a valuable device for RNFL and ONH analyses. For comparison of these two groups in terms of glaucomatous optic nerve disease development steps, OCT yields helpful parameters.
