Dr. Purpose: To purpose of this study is to search the central corneal thickness (CCT) in pseudoexfoliative (pex) glaucoma patients and to find out that whether if it is different in unilateral px glaucoma patients from those of their other eyes without exfolaition.
Materials and Methods: In the first phase of study 31 pex glaucoma and 81 POAG patients who were newly diagnosed in our glaucoma unit were examined. CCT of pex glaucoma patients (one eye if bilateral) and one eye of POAG patients were measured with ultrasonic pachymeter. As the second phase of the study, CCT of 16 unilateral pex glaucoma patients’ pex and nonpex eyes were recorded. Intraocular pressures (IOP) of all patients were measured with Goldmann applanation tonometer (GAT). Results were analsyed statistically.
Results: The mean age of pex glaucoma patients was 67±7 years and the mean age of POAG patients was 56±9 years (p=0.000). The mean IOP of pex glaucoma cases was significantly higher than that of POAG cases ((27±7 mmHg and 23±4 mmHg, respectively) (p=0.002). The mean CCT of pex glaucoma patients was 548±34 μm, and the mean CCT of POAG patients was 558±33 μm (p=0.141). The mean age of uniateral pex glaucoma patients was 65±6 years; in their pex eyes mean CCT and mean IOP were 551±30 μm and 27±8 mmHg, whereas mean CCT and mean IOP were 542±30 μm and 20±3 mmHg in their other eyes (p=0.007 ve p=0.002, respectively).
Conclusion: It can be deduced that in pex glaucoma patients IOP mesaurements with GAT will not be effected considerably from CCT values. The higher CCT values in unilateral pex eyes migt point to a lesser endothelial reserve in these eyes.
