4Sincan State Hospital, Eye Clinic, Ankara/TURKEY Purpose: Our purpose in this study was to investigate the role of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and nitrite-nitrate in the development of pseudoexfoliation (PEX) syndrome.
Materials and Methods: A total 30 eyes consisting of 17 eyes without pseudoexfoliation (PEX) syndrome (the control group) and 13 eyes with PEX (the PEX group), that underwent cataract surgery due to senile cataract were included in the study and humor aqueous samples were taken from the anterior chamber during surgery. TNF-α and nitrite/nitrate levels were determined in the humor aqueous samples.
Results: The average age of the patients was 63.4±4 years in the control group, and 61.3±2 years in the PEX group (p>0.05). The ratio of females to males was 8/9 in the control group and 7/6 in the PEX group (p>0.05). When the PEX group compared with the control group, no significant difference was found between the humor aqueous TNF-α and nitrite/nitrate levels (p>0.05).
Conclusion: TNF-α and nitrite/nitrate increase in some ocular pathologies with oxidative stress. TNF-α and nitrite/nitratate levels were similar in our study groups.
