5Ankara Atatürk Eğitim Araştırma Hastanesi 1. Göz Kliniği Şefi, Ankara, Prof. Dr. Purpose: Detection of conjunctival flora comprasion of flouroqunilones, penicilin sensitivity
Materials and Methods: Onehundred-seventyfour eyes of 167 patients who were planned for cataract surgery. Who didn’t use topical drugs and no infection or allergy were included in the study. 82 of the patients were male and 85 were female at average age of 68,14±9,6 (50-80). Samples obtained from inferior fornix were cultured EMB, blood agar, chocolate agar. For type definition gram staining and coagülase test, for antibiogram sensitivity penicillin G, methicillin(oxacillin), ofloxacin and ciprofloxacin were used.
Results: Bacterial growth was found in 163 eyes of 174 eyes. There was no bacterial growth at 11 eyes. 107 eyes S. epidermidis at 45 eyes S. aureus,at 6 eyes B.subtilis were detected. Micrococcus spp., Klebsiella spp., E.coli, Enterobacter spp. and C. diptheriae were found in one eye, subsequently. 99 (92.5%) of S. epidermidis was found to be sensitive to ofloxacin, 98 (91.5%) was sensitive to ciprofloxacin, 80 (747%) was sensitive to methicillin and 15 (14%) was sensitive to penicillin G. 41(91.1%) of S. aureus was found to be sensitive to ofloxacin, 39 (86.6%) was sensitive to ciprofloxacin, 32 (71.1%) was sensitive to methicillin and 4 (8.8%) was sensitive to penicilin G. Penicillin G sensitivity was significantly low in both species. No significant difference was found among other three antibiotics.
Conclusion: The most commonly detected species were S. epidermidis and S. aureus. Conjunctival flora was found to be significantly sensitive to methicillin, ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin. Keywords : Conjunctival flora, culture, antibiogram
