Effect of Central Corneal Thickness on Surgically İnduced Astigmatism in Cataract Surgery

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of corneal thickness on surgically induced astigmatism in clear corneal incision phacoemulsification surgery without complication.
Material and Methods: The retrospective clinical study comprised 50 eyes of 50 patients that had cataract surgery without complication performed between 2007-2009 in our clinic. The preoperative keratometry and pachymetry values and postoperative keratometry values after 4.12±1.96 months were recorded. The surgically induced astigmatism was estimated by using vector analysis procedure. The corelation of central corneal thickness with surgically induced astigmatism was estimated with Pearson correlaton test.
Results: The mean age of patients was 66.41±4.15, the mean follow-up time was 4.12±1.96 months. The mean preoperative and postoperative central corneal thickness was 546.94 ±54.86 μm and 545.76±52.54 μm, and the mean surgically induced astigmatism was 1.38±0.67 dioptry. There was no correlation between central corneal thickness and the surgically induced astigmatism (r=- 0.014, p=0.95).
Conclusion: There was no effect of central corneal thickness on surgicay induced astigmatism in clear corneal incision phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implanted patients.
