2M.D., Beyoglu Eye Training and Research Hospital, Istanbul/TURKEY Purpose: To compare dorzolamid/timolol maleat (DT) and brinzolamid-timolol maleat (BT) fixed combination on lowering intraocular pressure (IOP) and side effects in patients with Primary Open Angle Glaucoma (POAG).
Materials and Methods: 80 eyes of 40 patients (18 male and 22 female) were included in this retrospective study. Inclusion criteria was; recently diagnosed POAG, age of over 18, IOP over 21 mmHg and 1 year follow-up time. 20 patients who use DT formed Group 1 and 20 patients who use BT formed Group 2. Control examinations were performed every month and follow-up time was 12 months. Anterior segment and retina exams were performed with slit-lamp biomicroscopy, IOP was measured with Goldmann applanation tonometry, perimetry performed with Octopus 900.
Results: Mean IOP for Group 1 and Group 2 were 23.82±1.68 and 23.96±1.80 at first exam. After using a medical treatment, IOP's of all patients were under 18 mmHg at all monthly control exams. IOP measurements significantly reduced during follow-up compared with baseline (p<0.05). During 12-month follow-up, there was no change in visual field. There was no systemic side effect in both groups. 4 patients had irritation-redness, 3 patients had foreign body sensation-ocular pain and 1 patient had temporary visual disturbance in Group 1. 3 patients had temporary visual disturbance in Group 2.
Conclusion: DT and BT were effective for lowering IOP in POAG patients and BT had less side effects.
