The Comparison of Blue Color Perception between Pseudophakic and Phakic Eyes Using on Anomaloscope

Purpose: To compare the changes in a blue color perception sensitivity with age between pseudophakic eyes and agematched phakic eyes.
Materials and Methods: Twenty-nine pseudophakic eyes of 29 patients (group A) with a mean age of 67.9±7.1 years and 29 phakic eyes of 29 age-matched controls (group B) with a mean age of 64.5±6.4 were included in the study. Blue-green color vision was evaluated with the Moreland equation of the HMC Anomaloscope. Anomaly quotients were calculated from the matching range values. The data were compared between group A and B before and after the division of each group into 3 age subgroups (group I: ≤64 years, group II: 65-71 years, group III: ≥72 years).
Results: The mean blue color vision anomaly quotients were lower in the pseudophakic eyes than they were in the phakic eyes. However, the difference was not statistically significant (p>0.05). Blue color perception significantly decreased with age in both groups (p<0.05). Although there was no statistically significant difference in anomoloscope anomaly quotients between pseudophakic eyes and phakic eyes within age group I and II (p>0.05), anomaly quotients were lower in pseudophakic eyes than they were in phakic eyes within age group III (p<0.05).
Conclusions: Blue color vision deteriorates with age in both pseudophakic and phakic eyes. Starting from the mid-6th decade, the deterioration in blue color perception with age is more prominent in phakic eyes than it is in pseudophakic eyes.
